I first came across Rhoda in my English class in Kenya and when I was casting for my Kenyan opera, “Ondieki the Fisherman” (1973). At the age of sixteen, she already had a glorious soprano voice and evident musicality; so I gave her the leading female role and wrote for her accordingly. Since then, she became an operatic singer of some international repute, even singing at Glyndebourne under Sir Simon Rattle. Now, in mature years, she gives recitals mainly in Scandinavia, and master classes, both in Norway, where she is married to a Norwegian doctor, and in Nairobi where she spends part of the year.
