This humorous piece is both a cri de cœur and an affirmation of the essential contribution made to the choir’s work by the alto section. It was commissioned by and for a small group of altos, with the aim of supporting their profile within the context of an a cappella choir.
Your ‘Alto Ego’ is absolutely brilliant. It’s got everything, really clever G&S type rhythmic variations and rhyming – ‘without rancour’, ‘galleon and anchor’ – all the references to the familiar quirks of choral singers, and the clever inclusion of the other great singers. I especially like v.4 with the counter tenors. I am impressed! (Liz Barber)
